We are pleased to share the eighth quarterly edition of the Cooperation in International Waters in Africa Program (CIWA) Bulletin.

Le UN Water Conference in New York City just ended and the CIWA Team was honored to be part of events on managing river basins; reinforcing the fact that cooperative transboundary water management is key to economic development and growth to achieve key public goods, climate resilience, biodiversity and conflict prevention.

UN 2023 WATER CONFERENCE: THE WORLD BANK AND CIWA WITH A SHARED VISION FOR WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
At the 2023 UN Water conference, the World Bank and CIWA advocated for a water-secure world: this is now time to turn the commitments made at this historic event into concrete actions through collaboration, bold investments & accelerated implementation. In case you missed CIWA Team’s sessions, here are a few we selected: Anders Jagerskog, CIWA Program Manager, presented the World Bank’s vision for a Global Facility for Transboundary Water Cooperation; Ai-Ju Huang, CIWA Deputy Program Manager, took part at the panel discussion on Uganda’s response to conflict and climate change Induced Migration through Improved Water Services and Water Security; Pierre-Jacques Lorillou, CIWA Senior Water Resources Management discussed a new regional water security initiative for the Sahel region, in partnership with OMVS. Africa’s longest river is under threat (Africa News)

Africa’s longest river - The Nile - is under threat. It's essential for millions of people, including in Sudan. But it could vanish due to factors including rising sea levels resulting in saltwater intrusion downstream. Global warming and misuse of the water source by humans are also causing concern for its future.

International protection for Lake Chad advances

Niger announced on Thursday that it will join the United Nations Water Convention, as neighboring Cameroon and Chad have already done. Nigeria is also expected to join as part of collective efforts to advance the sustainable management of the Lake Chad basin, which is shared by four African countries.

Nile Basin Initiative Conducts Experiential Learning Tour of the Regional Rusumo Hydroelectric Project

In February 2023, the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) in partnership with the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) and the Regional Rusumo Hydroelectric Project (RRHP) conducted an experiential tour of this flagship regional hydropower infrastructure project that is located at Rusumo Falls at the border of Tanzania and Rwanda on River Kagera.

River Culture: a global study examines the relationship between humans and nature

A book just published by UNESCO entitled: 'River Culture: Life as a Dance to the Rhythm of the Waters', presents 28 case studies and several reviews which show how differently humans and non-human organisms have adapted to the rhythms of natural flooding and periods of drought.

NILE DAY 2023: Deepening Nile Cooperation for a Sustainable Development in a Changing Climate

Nile Day 2023 theme is a timely reminder to Basin citizens on the common climate change-related challenges we are facing and emphasizes the need to embrace Nile cooperation as a crucial mechanism for sustainable utilization of the Nile waters and protecting the environment.

CIWA RELEASES ITS SOCIAL INCLUSION TOOL KIT

CIWA has developed a tool kit specifically targeted to social development and related experts working to provide technical expertise on the development and implementation of CIWA programming at the institutional and project level. Working together with CIWA teams, it provides significant detail to assist experts to understand the critical steps they can take to facilitate the integration of social inclusion considerations throughout the project cycle.
